The bacteria found in the oral cavity of a pregnant woman due to tooth decay or poor oral hygiene, can produce problems in the fetus and also lead to a miscarriage. It 's the result of a study by Yiping Han, a researcher at the University of Dental Medicine in Cleveland. The fault is all in the bacterium Fusobacterium nucleatum , in itself harmless and be responsible of periodontal disease, abscesses and infections of several who managed to pass from the mouth to the fetus through the mother's blood. The experiments were carried out on mice of the laboratory, but the practice has shown that by analyzing the DNA of a dead baby was found a strain of Fusobacterium nucleatum identical to that found in the mouth of the mother. The bacterium is also responsible for miscarriages and premature births and once in the blood directly attacks the placenta.
is not yet clear what are the virulence factors that allow the bacterium to colonize the placenta. One possible candidate is the protein Fada that allows the bacterium to make contact with the epithelial cells of the mouth and the endothelial cells of the placenta. Research shows the importance of oral hygiene of pregnant women.
